Platform for Privacy Preferences, or P3P, is the standard for the
description of what information a web site obtains from visitors,
who uses it, and what for. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 looks for
P3P components on every website it visits. If it does not find such
files it will warn the user that the site is potentially unsafe,
may block cookies, and may even block some web functions from working.
In its default settings, Internet Explorer 6 will disable most banner
ads and shopping systems unless they have P3P components.
For some years privacy has been a major stumbling block in e-commerce.
The number one reason people give for refusing to buy online is
concern about the privacy of their information. P3P is the web community’s
answer to this problem. Creating P3P files for your site is going
to be essential if you want to conduct e-commerce. Luckily, P3P
does not require any special software on the server; any web server
can handle P3P now.
P3P is an XML-based language, which means you must understand XML
in order to create P3P files. However, no programming knowledge
is required. This course teaches the basics of XML as well as P3P
itself.
This course teaches P3P and how to implement it. By the end of
this course students will be able to design a P3P architecture for
their web site, create the various P3P components required, and
apply them to the site in the required fashion. In addition, students
will learn how to assess the implications P3P has for the e-commerce
aspects of the business, and how to adapt existing process to match.
Students will understand how to turn P3P to their advantage, learning
how to use it to increase the trust visitors have in the site, and
how to use P3P to enhance sales. The course contains significant
hands-on exercises and students will have the opportunity to develop
real-world P3P components for instant deployment on their web sites.
